2nd Competition for Clarinet Chamber Music Ensembles

SOLO CATEGORY

Line-up: Solo Clarinet and Clarinet with piano accompanist
Piano accompanists are available on the spot for preparing the competition programme. You can bring your own accompanist if you wish so. However, all costs connected with this decision will have to be carried by you.

First prize:
The 1st prize is endowed with EUR 1.000,-.


1st Round: September 3rd, 2011

Compulsory piece 1: Claude Debussy: “First Rhapsody for clarinet and piano”

Compulsory piece 2: Maximal length: 5 minutes

Option 1: A piece for clarinet and piano commissioned by the ClariArte. The clarinet part of this piece will give much freedom and plenty of scope to the interpreter for unfolding his or her creativity. Only the general structure and the piano part will be prescribed.

Option 2: The participant can select one of various short motifs and compose/improvise a solo piece or a piece for clarinet and piano based on this motif.

The composition and the motifs will be handed to the participants at the beginning of the course. The compulsory piece will be worked on and rehearsed in the course with the professors.


Final Round: September 4th, 2011, Public concert

Length: 20 minutes
Three clarinettists will be admitted to the final round. The participants will present a programme of 20 minutes which has to contain the compulsory piece. The programme of the final round will be selected by the participants at their own discretion.


CLARINET ENSEMBLES

Line-ups:
• Basset horn trio
• Clarinet quartet with bass clarinet ( basset horn optional)
• Clarinet quintet with bass clarinet (basset horn optional)

First prize:
The 1st prize is endowed with EUR 2.000,-.


1st Round: September 3rd, 2011

A programme of 25 minutes comprising various styles of music. Additionally a compulsory piece will have to be performed. The sheet music for this piece will be handed to the participating ensembles at the beginning of the course. This piece will be arranged and rehearsed by the competing ensembles during the ClariArte.


Final Round: September 4th, 2011, Public concert

The final round will take place in the course of a concert. The 2 ensembles of the final round will present a programme of 25 minutes including the compulsory piece. The programme of the final round will be selected by the competing ensembles at their own discretion.


Solo Category and Clarinet Ensembles Guidelines

The choice of programme, presentation, interpretation or arrangement of the compulsory piece as well as the technical qualities of the interpreters will be assessed by external judges and will constitute important criteria. The members of the vienna clarinet connection will not function as judges.
